The drawing of the titular sword from the stone, Arthur’s rise to the throne, the betrayal of Lancelot and Guinevere, and Arthur’s death at the hands of Mordred all play out under the artful direction of John Boorman. Picking up the story even before Arthur was born with the tyrant Uther Pendragon, the film covers the entirety of Arthur’s life in tragic detail. The 1981 film is directly based on the most recognizable portions of Sir Thomas Malory’s collection, and is a modern classic.

Le Morte d’Arthur is the origin of all modern retellings of the tale, no matter how far from the source material they depart, and nowhere is this more clear than in the 1981 movie masterpiece – Excalibur. Le Morte d’Arthur (“The Death of Arthur”) is a 15th-century Middle English epic written by Sir Thomas Malory, and gathers together various tales and folklore involving Arthur into a comprehensive and cohesive story. What few people realize is that this book – and most of the modern retellings of the story – are actually based on a volume written over five centuries ago. Tales of Arthur have existed for centuries, though most modern visitors to our website will be familiar with a few of the more recent classics – The Once and Future King by T.H White, for most, which was published in 1958. And with good reason – if anything can be said to be a mythological history of England, it’s the story of Arthur, the kingdom of Camelot, the Knights of the Round Table – and the mighty sword Excalibur. Films, television series, book series, and stage productions all exist of the tale, each giving their own interpretation of the story. The demon Barbas later cast an illusion of an evil future Wyatt wielding Excalibur to torment Leo Wyatt, who feared failing as a father. Piper then took the sword and placed it back in the stone, telling her sisters that Wyatt would not get the sword until he was at least eighteen. Wyatt then claimed ownership of the sword and used it to vanquish Mordaunt. However, the sisters had already figured out his plan and set a trap. Mordaunt appeared before Wyatt and tried to slay him with the sword. He then stabbed Piper and went after the true wielder, which was Wyatt Halliwell. After recruiting several demons, Mordaunt revealed his true nature and intentions when he vanquished the knights to absorb their power, giving him enough power to claim Excalibur for himself. He then pursued her to form her own Knights of the Round Table. Mordaunt started training Piper in using the sword while its power started to corrupt her. At that point, the sorcerer Mordaunt appeared, claiming to be there to tutor Piper in using the sword.
However, none succeeded until Piper pulled it from the stone after becoming frustrated. The sisters then orbed the sword home and not soon after, magical beings from far and wide appeared to try pulling the sword from the stone to prove they were its true wielder. However, before her death, she threw the sword and planted it in a stone. The sisters arrived at the lake and witnessed the Lady of the Lake being killed. Fearing the sword would be lost, the Lady of the Lake asked the Charmed Ones for help. In 2003, a demon known as the Dark Knight sought to take Excalibur for himself.
